OUR LABASA STATION
Our new station in Labasa is 150 miles to the North of our main facility in Lautoka. We use two ways to transport the fish to our main facility - Sea freight and air freight. Sea freight is the most economical but takes over 24 hours whereas Air Freight is expensive but only takes 45 minutes. This station is set up to do mostly fish but we have also set up community workshops on two separate islands to teach them coral farming and we will provide the market and income for these projects that are just underway. This was a very complicated venture for WSI and many government meetings and requirements had to be satisfied over a two year period once we expressed interest.

  FISH SYSTEM AND FACILITY
We have rented a large two story house just outside of town that has become all in one for us. The divers live upstairs and the fish manager lives downstairs while the fish holding system surrounds the house on a newly built concrete veranda with overhead roof. My good friend Bob Fenner actually came down to help with the set up and do some initial fish surveys. You will see him having a good time in one of the shots.

COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS
The concept of coral farming was completely new to the northern Islands in Fiji. Our goal is to teach the people a new way to earn an income using their own resource. Though this plan we supply the entire amount of materials necessary to complete the project and with no investment required a village now has a business to provide much needed income on a monthly basis through our purchases. We have taught them to grow over 2,000 pieces per month at which we contract to but a minimum of 1,000 pieces. The coral that we do not purchase is replanted on the reef to increase habitat and provide for future brood stock for their farms.
We are proud of this accomplishment and look forward to see the benefits this project provide to the people in the north where income and employment is very limited.
